Based on that information and the input of many different doctors here, we have decided to go forward with having a trach placed. I was hoping to speak with ENT about that today, but they didn’t get a chance to stop by, so hopefully tomorrow we can see them to talk surgery logistics. The ICU team thought maybe we would need to wait based on her current gut issues, but General Surgery said that they did not have any reason to hold us up on that front. The reason this is so great is that we can combine two long inpatient stays into one long one. We can work on the trach while we hope for the other to resolve.
Speaking of the gut, our day nurse today did help us resolve some of Aimee’s vomiting by replacing the NG tube that is on suction. The old one was suctioned to the side of her stomach or possibly clogged. Unfortunately, her stomach is still quite distended. The General Surgery team attempted to release it with a catheter up through her ileostomy, but had no success. She continues to have pressure there pushing her belly way out and up constricting her lungs a bit. It appears to simply be an ileus. There is no way to know how long until her intestine wakes up and no medications to help. If it does not work soon than a new CT scan will be done to rule out anything surgery can fix.
